A QEEG or "brainmap" takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour from start to finish. Please see section regarding pre-Brainmap Instructions to prepare for this test. The patient sits in a comfortable reclining chair. During this appointment the patient will have two measurements taken of their head with a tape measure. Then two marks will be made on the forehead with an erasable china marker, and sponge disk stickers will be applied to the forehead. The earlobes are cleaned with a slightly abrasive alcohol pad, and two ear clips with wires attached are clipped on. An electrode cap is then placed over their head. The cap fits on over the entire head similar to a shower cap. Stitched within the cap are sensors that read and record the brain wave activity.
![]() Electrode gel is then inserted into each sensor to accentuate the brain wave signal so it can be read by a computer. The final step of the application process is to lower the impedance of each sensor by gently manipulating the gel within it with the flat end of a wooden q-tip. Now the patient is ready for the actual recording. Aside from the feeling of wearing the cap, the patient will not experience any sensation while the recording is taken and there is no risk to the patient whatsoever. The first part of the test is done with the patient's eyes open while s/he stares at a computer screen. The goal is for the patient to remain as still as possible for a period of 5 – 10 minutes.
![]() The next phase of the recording is with the patient's eyes closed and again s/he remains as still as possible. This recording also continues for an additional 5 – 10 minutes.
![]() Once the recording is complete, the cap will be removed and the gel cleaned off the patient's hair. Remaining gel washes away quickly once hair is shampooed. The results of the testing will be available for discussion at the results appointment in 10-14 days.
